The Capital Jazz Festival was first founded in 1993 and whilst predominantly still a jazz festival, it has evolved over the years to host a number of fine art and crafts demonstrations at the Festival Marketplace. During performances you’ll also be able to enjoy culinary treats and the renowned food court and meet some of the finest artists from around the world in the artist workshops.

Many late night parties are also hosted in various venues around Columbia after the days entertainment has seized.

There are generally two main stages at the festival, the Pavilion Stage which hosts contemporary jazz and the Soul Stage (commonly referred to as the Dark Stage/Party Stage on Friday) which featured a more urban flavour of music.

Attendance figures for the Capital Jazz Festival are in the tens of thousands.

Columbia is a family friendly place and there are many things to do for all age-groups. First on the list would be to visit the 325 acre Centennial Park in Elliot City which loops around the beautiful Centennial Lake. Other than the beautiful scenery, there are many sporting facilities (basketball, baseball fields, playgrounds etc) which you can take part in, or just sit and watch others which can be equally enjoyable. You can also rent a boat and go fishing or chill out in the numerous cafe’s and small restaurants. It’s open from dusk to dawn, alcohol and picnics are allows but no hunting or feeding the animals!

If you’re around for the last two weeks of June and still haven’t quite had your jazz fix, you could always attend the Columbia Festival of the Arts which not only has fine arts and crafts for display but more live jazz music!

Some other cool places you might want to visit are the African Art Museum of Maryland and the Columbia Ice Rink. Enjoy!
