DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival
DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival 2014
With audiences in excess of 35,000 each year, the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is now known to be one of the largest free jazz festivals on the East Coast of the USA. It’s been going strong since 1989 and is held in memory of Clifford Brown to died in a tragic car accident in 1956 at age 25 alongside his friend and promising pianist Richie Powell.
Free jazz festivals are always great, especially when they are hosted outside. Organizers of the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival have worked hard over the years to host the event each year and it shows. Each year a host of internationally renowned performers come to Wilmington, Delaware to entertain audiences and play in memory of one of the jazz trumpeters, Clifford Brown. On an average year you can expect to see around 20 artists performing. In the past, Herbie Hancock, David Snaborn, Sonny Rollings and Wynton Marsallis have all performed here.
A suitable festival for the whole family held over 4 days, this year from the 18th-21st of June. If you can make it I would highly recommend going.
The festival was founded in 1956 in memory of jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown who died from a car crash in the early hours one summer morning. Whilst only 25 years of age, Clifford Brown was seen by many to be one of the great jazz trumpeters of his time, up there with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis.
Brown was born in Wilminton, Delaware in 1930.
The 2013 festival celebrated the 25th anniversary of the festival.

If you’re coming from afar to visit the DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival then you might want to take a few days out and experience the other highlights that Delaware has to offer. I’ve put together a small personalized list of the best things to do in Wilmington whilst your here, Enjoy!
Take a trip to the Grand Opera House to see some theater, musical or more live music. The acoustics are fantastic and you really can’t find a bad seat. You’re able to take drinks to your seats and most of the restaurants are nearby so you could really make a good evening.
Nemours Mansion and Gardens
The Nemours Mansion and Gardens is a 300-acre country estate which is beautifully furnished and recently renovated. The ceilings are covered in artwork and the internal decor is fantastic. Guides are available (and recommended) if you really wanted to get the most out of your trip here. Definitely one of the better things to do whilst your in Wilmington.
The Frawley Stadium opened in 1993 and is the home field for the Wilmington Blue Rocks minor league baseball team. If you’re into sport and haven’t been to a baseball match for a while then this is a great opportunity to do so. It’s cheap, suitable for all ages and every seat has a good view of the action. Open afternoons and evenings. If you can go on Friday evening then you’ll likely see some fireworks at the end of the match.
