There are 4 main venues for this year’s Jazz à Vienne festival. The Roman Theatre, Midnight Club, JazzMix, Les Jardins de Cybèle.
The Roman Theatre
Renovated in 1908, the steps of the roman amphitheater rest against a steep hill called the Pipet. In ancient times temples and statues were formed as a sacred extension of the theatre at the top of the hill. The Théâtre Antique of Vienne was the second largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire, just after the one in Autun, Gaul.
People waited until 1937 until they could attend a show in the amphitheater again. In 1980, ‘Blues Night’ was born, serving as the inaugural event of the festival. However, due to a storm, the Blues concerts took place under a tent that served as a substitute for the Théâtre Antique. It was the first rainy night of the international jazz festival: Jazz à Vienne. Since then, the Théâtre Antique has become the main stage of the Jazz à Vienne festival. Every year, more and more people attend the festival thanks to the great ambiance they feel in the amphitheater and all around the city of Vienne. – Source: jazzavienne.com
Midnight Club (club de minuit)
Flowing with charm is the Italian Theatre of Vienne which will host the Club de Minuit during the festival. It will be displaying the same architecture as it did centuries ago, only now one of many Historical Monuments located in France. The manner in which the theater was constructed allows for artists and the public to have interactions within a close perimeter that helps to stimulate a special relationship between the two. For years now, the Theater of Vienne has hosted the Club de Minuit which permits Jazz à Vienne to offer acoustic concerts in a friendly environment. – Source: jazzavienne.com
Established 2006, JazzMix is held beneath a magical mirror roof that gives the stage a unique feeling and creates the illusion that an inanimate object could truly have a soul. It’s the place everyone wants to be after a concert has ended; the scene of the after party and a simple extension of the Théâtre Antique and the Club de Minuit. For the last seven years, JazzMix has been the center of some of the most memorable moments comprising of different generations, cultures and backgrounds that come together to form everlasting roots. It is the place where artists can claim several musical roots: Hip-hop, Folk, Afro, Electro, Soul, Fusion, World… all facets of jazz are incorporated. – Source: jazzavienne.com
Les Jardins de Cybèle
Near the gardens of Cybèle, from the Middle Ages until 1938 stood the charity building, Aumône Saint Paul and the hospital, Hôtel-Dieu. The roman remains that we see standing today in the Jardins de Cybèle were discovered at the time that Hotel Dieu and Aumône Saint Paul were destroyed. This new archaeological garden was holding old archways, an assembly room, houses and fitted out decks from the Ancient times. – Source: jazzavienne.com
