Proclaimed as the “first jazz festival of international significance”, for 8 days straight the Nice Jazz Festival draws in a crowd of over 30,000 people and entertains them with an eclectic mix of jazz, soul, funk, pop and worldly music. In 2014 it hopes to break all previous records for attendance.

With previous lineups including Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald & Miles Davis you’ll be sure to have a good time!

The Nice Jazz Festival is held annually normally during the month of July and brings international acts to the city of Nice, on the French Riviera. In 2007 Frommer’s stated it was “the biggest, flashiest, and most prestigious jazz festival in Europe.”

Held over 2 main venues, The Masséna stage (6,000 audience) & La scène Théâtre de Verdure (2415 occupancy).

Since its formation in 1948 the Nice Jazz Festival has continued to entertain the public with a well rounded cast of performers from all over the world. In the festivals first year the crowd saw the like of Suzy Delair and Louis Armstrong perform.

From the mid ’90s there was a change of focus in the acts that performed during the festival, from traditional jazz to more worldly music and pop genres. The jazz focus has remained strong and is now regarded as many to be one of the Riviera’s biggest annual events.

From the mid naughties the festivals attendance started to slip and in 2011 the festivals organiser Vivian Sicnasi decided to change the venue from the once popular Cimiez to a more centrealally locatied Place Masséna – from this year onwards it’ll be in Nice’s gorgeous new Promenade du Paillon – the Coulee Verte!

Whilst originally scheduled as a 5-day event the festival has added another few days worth of performances by popular demand and now schedules over 8 days with the Placa Massèna hosting a number of musically themed nights: trance, tempo, energy, breath and vibration.

Flights & Transportation

The nearest international airport to the Nice Jazz Festival is the Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) and is located approximately 7km from Nice city center.

Currently 18 airlines fly into Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (list of airlines here). To get the best flight deals I would use SkyScanner‘s official search widget below.

To get to the city from the airport you have a number of options available to you, the classic taxi, car rental or you could jump on one of the many airport shuttles/buses.

A couple of good resources for airport transfers:

You should be able to buy tickets in advanced up until around the 31 May 2014. Alternatively you can buy your tickets on Place Masséna early july.

The cheapest accommodation options I could find in and around Nice, France during the festival period (Early/Mid July) are shown below (Click HERE for a complete list):

*** Hotel prices rise exponentially as you get closer to the festival dates. Book early to avoid disappointment. ***

5 Star Luxury...

5 Star Luxury…

If you’ve got a little cash to spend then you could consider checking into the Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée. 5 star luxury.

If you are on a super shoe-string budget then search HostelWorld and get a bed in Nice for as little as €20.00! – (Private rooms $25.00+)

I would recommend checking Nice hotel reviews on TripAdvisor prior to placing any booking. Alternatively, why don’t you try something different and rent someones apartment during the festival period at AirBnB?! Click here for a free £15 credit towards your first booking!

Note that there is NO TENT CAMPING at the Nice Festival this year. The nearest camp-site to Nice is the Domaine du Colombier Campsite which is located only a few KM from the beach and offers all the creature comforts you can expect from campsites in France.
