The St Lucia Jazz festival has been around since 1992 and was initially started to help increase tourism into St Lucia in May time which was traditionally a very quiet tourism time in the area.

In the first few years the festival was held over 4 locations but as it has grown the festival has now expanded over several locations over the island (see ‘Venues’ below).

The festival celebrated it’s 20th anniversary in 2011, an outstanding achievement as many other islands in the surrounding areas had tried to host jazz festivals and failed miserably. Now ranked as the 2nd best Caribbean festival, coming second only to the T&T’s Carnival. Many people say its one of the best Jazz Festivals in the world including well known George Wein, the famous US jazz promoter, who ranks it as ‘in the top three jazz festivals in the world’.

Show More History...

Whilst primarily a jazz festival, in 2013, the festival was re-branded and named the St Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival and now hosts the St Lucia HOT Couture, the Cultural Explosion, St Lucia Sound Stage, and Blu Session – Word in an Altered Scale. From this year on you’ll now find dance performances, art shows, theatres and culinary art shows in various locations around the island. You’ll find many ‘fringe activities’ associated with the jazz festival including the most well known ‘Jazz in the South’ which by all accounts could be a festival in itself.

If you go to the Saint Lucia Jazz fest you’ll not only see jazz performances but also R&B, HipHop and some pop. The festival has been host to some great acts over the years, some of which include:

Diana Ross
John Legend
Natalie Cole
Al Green
Anita Baker
Third World
James Carter
Boys II Men
Manian Jr. Gong Marley
Smokey Robinson
Wyclef Jean
Luther Vandross
Gladys Knight
Herbie Hancock
Kool & The Gang
Mary J. Blige
Chaka Khan
Jeffrey Osborne
Amy Winehouse

In 2013, 3,500 people came to the island for the sole purpose of attending the festival and at the April 30 show at Mindoo Phillip Park some 6,000 people attended with 7,000+ paid ticket holders attended the closing May 12 performance which was headlined by R. Kelly.

Jazz In the South

“Jazz in the South” started out in 1997 as a small community activity. It quickly distinguished itself through great planning, support and excellent artiste selection as one of the main actors in the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, with its focus on Caribbean and Creole Jazz. “Jazz in the South” is an offspring of Labowi Promotions, established by a small group of people from the southern village of Laborie. It is a cultural project with the ambition to promote and support Caribbean music and musicians, including those residing in the diasporas of Europe and North America, by exposing their work and giving them opportunities to meet, collaborate and create. It is also a community-based project, rooted in the South of Saint Lucia, conceived as an instrument to support economic activity, business opportunities and social cohesion in host communities. This year, Jazz in the South concerts will take place at four different venues, including the magical Balenbouche Estate in Choiseul, the Rudy John Beach Park in Laborie and Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa in Vieux Fort. In addition, Jazz in the South will for the first time include a concert in Castries, at the National Cultural centre. – St Lucia Jazz

Soufriere Jazz

Soufriere Jazz has been touted by many as being the epitome of village jazz. Another Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival must do, Soufriere hosts a myriad of shows at various locations around the town. Jazz on the Waterfront, Sulphur Springs Jazz at the world renowned and only drive-in-Volcano and Jazz at Fond Gens Libre all adorn a delightful calendar that seeks to please any would be patron. – St Lucia Jazz

Hotels & Accommodation

The cheapest accommodation options I could find in and around Saint Lucia during the festival period (early May) are shown below (Click HERE for a complete list):

*** Hotel prices rise exponentially as you get closer to the festival dates. Book early to avoid disappointment. ***

Hotels Combined

If you are on a super shoe-string budget then search HostelWorld and get a bed in St Lucia for as little as $29.30!

I would recommend checking St Lucia hotel reviews on TripAdvisor prior to placing any booking. Alternatively, why don’t you try something different and rent someones apartment during the festival period at AirBnB?! Click here for a free £15 credit towards your first booking!

If you wanted to stay at a camp-site this year you could check out KZN Wildlife who offer camping options at Eden Park.

Flights & Transportation

The nearest international airport to St Lucia Jazz Festival is Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) and is located approximately 50 km from Pigeon Island (you could also try the George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) which is located on the outskirts of the Castries).

There are currently 15 airlines that fly into St Lucia: United AirlinesAmerican AirlinesUS AirwaysDeltaJet BlueAir CanadaWestjetCanjetBritish AirwaysVirgin AtlanticCondorLIATAir CaraibesWinAir & Air Antilles Express.

To get the best flight deals I would use SkyScanner as they take 0% commission and are rarely beaten on price. Feel free to do a quick check on prices using their official flight checker below (note: Results will open in a new browser window so you won’t leave this page 😎 ):

Show Bus, Taxi and Car Rental Info...

Local Bus Info

The cheapest method of getting around on St Lucia is via the local buses which are actually privately owned minivans and loop around the whole island stopping off at pretty much all towns. Buses will need to be flagged down as there are no official bus stops on the islands. They run until 10pm (later on Friday nights) and hardly run at all on Sunday.

Fares are cheap EC$2.5 – EC$10 depending on journey length. Try to pay in the local currency and not USD$ as otherwise you’ll get over charged. Some bus drivers will not accept USD.

More bus information and timetables can be found at the Saint Lucia Bus website.

Taxis on the island are not cheap and can be picked up from taxi stands and called for over the telephone. A taxi fare from Castries to Hewanorra Airport is about EC$120, from Castries to Rodney Bay is about EC$40. Up to four persons can ride for the price of one. Mini-buses can be hired for groups of up to 10 for a slightly higher price.

If booking a taxi I would recommend ‘Christopher Taxi Services‘ they seem to have good reviews on Trip Advisor. More taxi numbers can be found here.

Car Rental

Three main car rental companies operate the island: Avis, Hertz and National (plus some smaller companies which are often cheaper). All three of the main companies operate from the airports and have local offices inland. You can rent a small car with unlimited mileage for around US$65/day. 4×4 vehicles are a little more expensive but recommended if touring the island as the roads are not great, especially after rainfall.

You can also rent motorcycles from the car rental companies but it is not advisable as the local drivers are a little on the wild side and the terrain doesn’t make for easy riding.

We currently have not been able to interview anybody at the St Lucia Jazz Festival, if you work for the festival and would like to answer a few questions for this section of your listing, please contact me so that we can get something arranged, thank you.

Outside of the Festival

If you’re coming to St Lucia especially for the jazz festival then it would be a shame to not indulge yourself in some of the other attractions the island has to offer whilst you’re here. With a nickname of “Helen of the West Indies” you’re sure to find some great things to do in her lush mountainous landscape. To name a few of the best attractions:

The Pitons

The Pitons

  1. Visit the Pitons
  2. Zip’ through the rainforest
  3. Visit the Sulphur Springs Park
  4. See the Fond Doux plantatio
